About Takaoka
About 400 years ago, Mr.Toshinaga Maeda, the ruler of the Kaga Domain, founded the town of Takaoka. In Takaoka, there are still many buildings built in the Edo, Meiji and Taisho periods.
Takaoka Castle has been selected as one of the 100 best castles in Japan.Currently, it is Takaoka Kojo Park with an area of about 220,000 square meters. It is a very valuable castle ruin with high cultural value where the moat and castle territory at the time of construction remain almost intact.There are no buildings such as the castle tower, but the stone walls, earthworks, and moats from the time of the castle’s construction remain.
Zuiryuji Temple was built about 360 years ago and is a temple to mourn Mr. Toshinaga Maeda. It is said to be a masterpiece of Zen Buddhist temple architecture in the early Edo period by the best carpenter of the Kaga domain, Mr.Yamagami Zenemon Yoshihiro. It was bult by the third owner, Mr.Toshitsune Maeda. In 1997, The sanmon gate(Entrance gate) , The buddha hall, and The main temple building were designated as national treasures.
Takaoka was built as a castle town in 1609, but in 1615, Takaoka Castle was abandoned by the Tokugawa family’s One Country, One Castle decree. After that, Takaoka developed as a town of commerce and industry, and the townspeople’s culture blossomed.
